Project Red Stripe

Now, that the Economist Group’s experiment with the project red stripe has officially ended, it is time to read throught the reflections on the project blog (a quick overview about the project can be found at the FAQs, but basically the idea was that a team of six Economist Group employees from around the world develop something that is innovative and web-based and bring it to market).

The final outcome is termed Lughenjo, which is being described as

it will be a global platform that helps to offset the brain drain, by making expertise flow back into the developing world

In congratulate the Economist for supporting and facilitating this experiment, since it seems that the concerted development work over a time-span of 6 months has contributed highly towards a better understanding of innovation proceses and cultural issues among those being involved. Of course, since the project team was still strongly tied to the core company, the group had to go through difficult times which might not always have been in favor for the project. In this context, it seems somehow strange for my that they welcomed ideas from outside the company, but then decided to stop announcing the selected idea. There were several reasons given, inter alia, the fear of pinching the idea. Looking at the final solution, I wonder what is so new that has not been around before.

At net.culture.lab we follow another approach and openly announce the projects that are being supported and nurtured.
