The Long Tail

Wired Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson is convinced about the inappropriability of the old 80/20 rule (20 of the goods are responsible for 80 of revenue for example). He has analysed data from internet music and book shops and thinks that his theory of the long tail is also applicable to software develeopment. Bnoopy and Harbus describe the idea behind the long tail theory. Bnoopy also started a company, Jotspot, which is dedicated to serve the long tail segment of customers within software products.

Personally I think, that the Internet reduces transactions costs at large and consequently offer scope for addresssing the long tail of consumer goods. On the other side, I doubt if the highlighted data are really accurate. Regarding business opportunities, many companies already recognised the benefits of combining locality with global audiences. So, although the idea might be add additional insight, it still has to prove with more data.
